OLD ARBITRATION & NEW.

CHANGES COMING. (By Tolograph.—-Prow Association.) Invercargill, June 10. Mr. J. R. Triggs (Conciliation Commissioner) sat to-day to hear a dispute between the Southland Slaughtcrmon's Industrial Union of Workers'and the Southland Frozen Meat and Produco Company, Ltd., and tho Ocean Beach Frozen Meat Company, Ltd. Messrs. W. T. Edge, William Peters,' and George Cooper represented tho union, and . Messrs. Jno. M'Queen, David-Cochrane, and R. A. .Anderson appeared on belialf of the employers. ' Mr. Triggs read a letter from the employers stating that they did not admit any of the claims of the Slaughtermen's Union, and objected to being made parties in the dispute on tho ground that they aro working under an agreement with the Murihiku Slaughtermen's Union. , . Mr. Edge explained that there were two factions—a registered union and an unregistered union. They were trying to bring tho latter into the union, but tho employers were doing their utmost to keep them out. At this juncture Mr. Triggs asked the union representatives to retire while he put tho position of similar companies beforo tho employers. When the discussion resumed, Mr.. Triggs said: "I note, gentlemen, on looking at tho list, that yoli aro perfectly well within your rights in citing the employers, and, what I would suggest, would be this i You understand there is going to bo an alteration in the Arbitration Act very shortly." Mr. Edge: I do not. Mr. Triggs: Well,.it will be one of the first measures coming before the House. Under the circumstances, I think it would be wise for you to adjourn the case, because tho employers have an objection to making an agreement. Mr. Edge: What is the objection? Mr. Triggs: Well, they are not prepared to state the objection. 1

Mr. Edge: Will they be prepared to make an .agreement, then? Mr. Triggs: I do not know what they will do then. Mr. Edge: Wo won't have an adjournment. and so the case will have to go fo 'the' Arbitration Court.
