A Mayoral Reception. A largely-attended reeeption was held in the Concert Chamber of the Town Hall last evening by the Mayor, Mr. J. P. Luke, and the Mayoress, in honour of Miss Proctor, tho lady who has been responsible for forging the last link in tho chain of solar observatories on this slda of the world. The room, with its crimson carpeting, its decorations of palms, foliage and llowers, and its array of comfortably cushioned chairs, looked very bright and cheerful, and at intervals during the evening a String band, stationed at the back of the stage, gave selections of music. The guests, as they arrived, were welcomed by the Mayor and Mayoress, and shortly after her arrival tho guest of the evening, Miss Proctor, was escorted to the platform. Also associated with her there were the Hon. H. D. Bell and Mre. Bell, tho Hon. James Allen, Professor Adams, Dr. Kennedy. Professor Easterfield, Professor Laby, and the host and -hostess. Several speeches were made touching upon various aspects of the work to bo accomplished by the observatory to be, and tho greatest appreciation was expressed. of Mr. Cawthron's generous gift. At the close of the speeches (reported in another column) supper was handed round, and opportunities were given peoplo who had not already mado her acquaintance, of meeting Miss Proctor. Tho singing of Mrs. BrainsDy and Mr. B. N; Fletcher mot with mnch appreciation. Mrs. Montague played tho accompaniments. Mrs. Luke wore a gown of black velvet, relieved with cream lace; Miss Luke was in pink silk, with an overdress of palest heliotrope ninon and lace; Miss Proctor wore a gown of red 'charineuse, veiled with black ninon and laco, and with two largo shaded crimson roses at tho waist; Mrs. H. D. Bell was in hand-painted silk, outlined with gold thread, with an overdress of grey bluo ninon and laco. Among others present were: Mrs. A. L. Herdman, wearing pink charmeusts veiled with cream laoo; Mrs. P. M. B. Fisher in grey; Miss Massoy, bluo charmeuso; Lady Stout, a black satin gown; Mrs. Fitchett, blaolc satin veiled with jewelled net; Mrs. D. Robertson, black frook; Dr. Fitchett. j Professor and Miss. Kirk, Mrs. A. R. Atkinson, Mrs. Fell, Dr. Agnes Bennett, Mrs. and Miss Shirtcliife, Mrs. King, Mis 3 Richmond, Miss MyeTS, Airs. H. N. Fletcher; Mr. and Mrs.. Gilford, Mrs. Morton. Miss Salmond, Mrs. Knight, Mr. and Miss Burnett, Mr. and Mrs. J. Myers, Miss Hardy, Mr. and Mrs. E. Levvoy, and many others. A Presentation; Tho resignation of Nurso Sexton, 6onior district nurse in connection with . St. John Ambulance Association for -the past seven years or more, has been accepted with regret by the committee, and, as a token of their appreciation of her unsparing service, she was presented with a purso of sovereigns and a testimonial. The Rev. Mr. Gilmour, of Norfolk Islands, and Mrs. Gilmour, left Auckland for Sydney yesterdiiy by tho Wimmera. An enjoyable musical evening was given by tho Y.W.C.A. Lyric Club last evening for the inmates of tho Ohiro Homo, MuBical items were contributed by Mr. Bennio (a harp solo), Mr. and Mrs. Billman (a duet), Mr. Turner (a flute solo), and the Misses Phillip, Bi.\, and Andrews, Mr. Billman, conductor of the Glee Club, also contributed a song. Tho ovening was greatly enjoyed by tho old people of the home. • Lady M'Cormick, of Sydney, wifo of Sir Alexander M'Cormiok, lecturer to the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Sydney, was a passenger by tho Maraina, en route to ancouver. Mr. and Mrs. W. Elliot, of Auckland, returned to AucklamHjy the Marama on Tuesday from a trip to Sydney. Miss Mary Proctor leaves Wellington to-day for Itotorua, where she will probably stay for tho next fortnight. There will be a meeting of tho Girl Peaco Scouts at the residence of Mrs. C. Izard this morning, at a quarter to twelve. Tho engagement is. announced of Mies Ethel May Connelly, third daughter of Mrs. A. Connelly, Kimbolton Road, Foilding, to Mr. P. R. Tongue, eldest eon ol Mr. R. Teague, Auckland. ■ Among the guests staying at the Albert Hotel aro the Misses Rita and Lily Fitzgerald and Mr. Ford Waltham, of "The Dandies," also Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Matthews, of Sydney; Mr. and Mrs. W, Sullivan, and the Misses Annie, Lena, and Doris Sullivan, and Mr. A. B. France.

A Coming of Ago Evening,

A very enjoyable evening was spent on Friday last at tbo residence of Sir. and Sfrs. George Lawrence, in Devon Street, on the occasion of the coining o£ aea of their eldest daughter, Miss Ethel Gertrude Lawrence. Amongst those present wore: Mesdamos Binninc, Campbell. Coombs, Lawrence, Perry, Walton, Messrs. G. Bell, R. Binning, L. Binning, C. Campbell, H. Coombs. P. Dobblo, — Duncan, W. Evans, B. Hodge, C. Lewis, J. l'erry', E. Probort, 1. Richards, J. Walton, and G. Thornton, Misses M. Burns, E. Downes, B. Downes, E. Lawrence, D. Martin, I. Perry, D. Perry, C. Robinson, D. White, and D. Thornton, Musical items and recitations were contributed by many of tho guests, and a guessing competition was entered into with much spirit, tho ])rize, a handsome hand-painted d'oyly, being won by Mrs. J. Walton. Supper was laid in the diningroom, which was prettily decorated with red, wliite, and blue festoons, and tho tabio looked charming with red and white chrysanthemums. After supper dancing was enjoyed by those present, and a most enjoyable evening was brought to a close bv tho singing of "Auld Lang Syno."
