He. added that the necessity of fortifying the Pacific Coast was more than, ever apparent. Altogether Canada would only ho ablo to place thirty thousand militia in tho field in the event of war. The results of tho defence system* oa regarded the militia, were not, ho claimed, commensurate with the expenditure.
