THE ENGLISH DERBY

SENSATIONAL RACE.

SUFFRAGETTE STOPS THE KING'S HOUSE.

JOCKEY BADLY INJURED,

FAVOURITE DISQUALIFIED. By Teleeraph—Press Association—Oopyrifstt London, ,Tunc 4. A brilliant gathering witnessed the English Derby at Epsom Downs. Their Majesties tho King and Queen, H.K.H. the Duke of Connauglit, and Mr. Watt (Premier of Victoria) wero among those present, and the crowd was a record one. Tho following was the result of tho raco for THE DERBY STAKES, of GSOO sovs.; second horse to Teceivo 400 sovs., and fhird 200 sovs. from tho stake. For entire three-yehT-olds. About one mile and a half. Mr. A. P. Cuulift'e's b. c. Aboyeur, by Desmond—Pawky, Oet 1 Mr. W. Raphael's b. c. Louvois, by Isinglass—St. Louvaine, 9st 2 Mr. W. Hall Walker's b. c. Great Sport, by Galliuuk—Gondolette, 9st 3 (Winner trained by T. Lewis at Nctlieravon, Wilts.) Craganour "Dumps" Aboyeur, started an odds representative of a threcbut an objection kid against his being awarded the stakes on the ground that ho had bumped into and interfered with Aboyeur in the straight was upheld, and the colt was disqualified. The winner went out friendless,, and started at odds representative of a threefigure dividend. [The odds were cabled, but under tho New Zealand law cannot bo published.] There was an excellent start. Aboyeur dashed away first, and Craganour moved into second place descending Busho's Hill. Aboyeur was still .leading at Tattenham . Corner, .Craganour, Shoguii, and Day Comet following. Louvois joined issue at the distance, and a tremendous tussle ensued. Craganour, challenging tho leader, won after a bumping finish, by a head, Louvois a neck behind Aboyeur. F. Wootton, on Shogun, was unlucky. Ho attempted to get through on the inside twice, but failed. Tho time was 2min. 87 3-ssec.

Mr. Cunlifi'o, the ownerof Aboyeur, declined to lodge a protest, but the stewards took tho initiative. Thoy examined J. Reiff, tho rider of Craganour, and Piper, tho rider of Aboyeur. This is the first disqualification since tlio Derby of 1814. (Eec. June 5, 9.45 p.m.) London, Juno 5. Tlie stewards found that Craganour interfered with other horses as well a3 boring and bumping Aboyeur. Suffragette's Wild Deed. During the race there most intense excitement on tho course. A woman named Elizabeth Davidson (a Bachelor of Arts, London University, and a prominent Suffragette') jumped through tTio railings as the King's liorso Anmer was rounding Tattenham Corner and threw lierself beforo Agadir and Anmer. She clutched the latter's bridle. Earl, on Agadir, ©scaped, but Anuier fell, and Jones, tho jockey, was thrown and badly injured, being removed on a stretcher. The woman was flung under the horse and horribly mangled—it was at first believed fatally-and is still unconscious in tho hospital. She had a Suffragette flag around - her waist. Miss Davidson has soveral times been imprisoned in connection with Suffragette outrages. Sho hid ill a hot-air shaft in tho House of Commons, and waß tho heroine of the hose-pipe incident at Strangeways Prison, Manchester, when sho barricaded her coll and struck a Baptist minister in mistake for Mr. Lloyd-George.

King Greatly Concerned. Their Majesties witnessed tho incident. The King was greatly concerned, and left tho Royal box and came to the enclosure, I whero lie watched Jones's removal. Later, lio visited the ambulance room. • Jones sustained a slight concussion, but has recovered consciousness. During tho Stewards' Handicap, following the Derby, Felizardo' fell, and was subsequently shot. AVhalley, tho jockey, was seriously injured. The Incident Kinematographed. (Eec. June 5, 9.45 p.m.) London, June 5. Many witnesses declare that Miss Davidson's act was deliberate, whilo others are of tho opinion that tho woman, believing that all the horses had passed, attempted to attract attention by trespassing on tho course. Anmer (tho King's horse) struck her liko a cannon ball, and flung her yards along the course. Tho horse somersaulted afterwards. Jones, tho jockey, had his foot caught in tho stirrup, and was dragged a distance. A kiuoinatograph picture of the incident was shown in the picture halls that same evening. Jones's rib was fractured, but 'his condition is improving. Miss Davidson is still' unconscious. Miss Pcthick Lawrence (tho Suffragette leader) interviewed, said that although tho deed was a, desperate one, no doubt Miss Davidson deliberately ventured her life. Her superhuman courago would call attention to woman's wrongs. Tho winner, Aboyeur, was a rank outsider. Only twice sinco this classic event was instituted has such an outside starter been accorded tho winning honours—in 1898, when Otto Maiden got homo on Jeddali, nnd in 1008, when W. Bullock rode tho Chevalier Ginistrelli's Signormctta to victory. In tho last ten years of racing the winning times for the Derby wore as follow:— . . „ Mm. See. 1903—Sir J. Miller's Rock Sand 242 4-5 1901—llr. Leopold de Eothschild's St. Amant 2 45 2-5 1905—Lord Eosebery's Cicero ... 2 .19 3-o 190G—Major Loder's Spearmint 2 30 4-o 1907—MV. B-.
