The London money market is passing through a stress. Tlio continued pressure for money on the rart of large borrowers, tho very unfavourable experience of underwriters who are holding great masses of undigested securities, and the prolonged tknrmsM of money, have all been contributing factor.?. The slump in. Canadian Paoilic Railway tliares, which declined 19 dollars (nearly £4) 'in five days, seemed to indicate that the slump was of American origin, but the cable messages published this morning associate the Victorian, lean with th« troublo. The Victoran Premier, Mr. Watt, who i\s now in London, arranged for a loan of £5,0C0,0C0 at 4 per cent., tho issue prico being fixed at £90. The loan was to have a currency of nino years, with the option of redemption at tho end of fivo years. It is now stated that a million of this loan had boen withdrawn. It is obvious' that the money market is in a very disturbed state. Two jobbers have been "hammered" on the Stock Exchange, but their liabilities are said not to be very serious. A jobber does not do business directly with the public, his business la with brokeiv. Jobbers deal in certain stocks and shares. Some confine themselves to British railways, others lo foreign find colonial. and so on. When oflked. the jobber "makes a price"—he nuolcs a prico at which he is prepared to buy nnd o- prico at which he i.'< ready to sell the slocks or 'hares in which he deals. "Hammering" is a Stock Exchange term. The usher of the Exchange mounts the rostrum, gives three taps or hammers with his gavel, and announces that So-and-so is unable to meet, his engagements. This is Stock Exchange bankruptcy. ■ Oii q toms dntios collected at tho port of Wellington yesterday amounted to £4955 .lis. TRADE IN ALLEN STREET.
