NEW LYNN TRAIN SMASH.
PUBLIC INQUIRY URGED. . (By Telegraph.—l'rcsa Association.) Auckland, June 1. A deputation from the New Lynn and Ilo'iderson districts waited upon the Hon. W. 11. lterrics, .Minister for Railways, tiiifi afternoon) with a request that a v public inquiry should be held into the circumstances of the roeenl accident at New.Lynn. They especially asked for a magisterial inquiry, and Mr. HamUey presented a petition signed by over TO people, comprising practically the wholo of tho passengers un tho train which met with til'; accident. The Minister said that there would hnvo to bo a Departmental inquiry first. One of the victims of Hie (lrciilciif was, unfortunately. very ill, and it might be nccessar.v for an inquest to be held, and th:it in 'itsslf would 1)5 a public inquiry. If he got well—and the Minister hoped he would—then it would time for considering the que.-tion of a publir, inquiry. Ml, good, however, would be served by duplicated inquiries,. He knew of no objection' (o a public inquiry, but could not nt prosent give a deiinito promise.
