Mr. H. J. 11. Blow, Under-Secretary for Public Works, who is at present on a visit to Australia, is expected to return to the Dominion about a week or ten days hence. Captain Ernest Gaunt, li.N., lias been appointed an aide-de-camp to the .King {.statics a Press Association cablegram). Captain Gaunt is well known in NonZealand as captain of the cruiser Cambrian, on the Austvalasian station. Ho is a son of the late Judge Gaunt, of Melbourne. . Page, lately offered tho IJosition of city onanist, has; ndviscd the Town Clerk by cable message that ho will accept tho post, and that ho, will leave London for New Zealand about the beginning of July. From ten applications tho Balchitlia District High School Committee regmmended the appointment of Mr. C. Parr, j M.A., second assistant in Moray Placo School, Duncdin, as first assistant in the Baicluthn School, vice Mr. W. L. Harrison, who ha? taken over the headmastership of the Walton School. Mr. V. H. -Meredith, of the Wellington icgal firm of Messrs. Meredith and Watson, is playing a leadin" part in tlio Dunedin Amateur Operatic Society's production of "The Geisha " Of his performance the "Otago Daily Times" says;— "As Reginald Fairfax, Mr. V. K. Meredith gave an agreeable impression of stability, and acted tho part in a thoroughly assured and reliable manner. Mr. Meredith's light baritone voico also Eave the audience pleasure as heard in 'Jack's tho Boy' and 'Molly Mine.'" Mr. George Troup, president of the Boys' Institute, has gone south to attend tho funeral of his brother-in-law, Mr. George Mackenzie, ono of Otago's pioneer settlers, who died suddenly at Queenstown on Sunday evening at the age of 73 years. The deceased was a cousin of tho High Commissioner (tho H6n, Thos, Mackenzie), and the Surveyor-General (Mr. James Mackenzie). Mrs. Mackenzie was in Napier on philanthropic business when tho news of her husband's death reached her.
At the Ka-wakawa (Bay of Islands) Hospital 011 Monday night, Mr. Gcorgo Thwaitcs, principal lighthouse-beeper at Cape Brett, and his wifo died from consumption. They had lwtli been suffering for vears, and it was on account of the state of his health that Mr. Thwaites wasunpointed to Cape Brett, as it was thought the climate there would afford some measure of relief. Tho deceased and his wifo were fairly woll known in Wellington, having been stationed at Penearrow Lighthouse from 1902 to 1905. Mr. Thwaites subssquondy transferred to Stephens Island, and later still was appointed principal lighthousc-kofper at Capo I'oulivind. Mr. and Mrs. Tlnvnitcs leave a family of young children.

Since he last visited New Zealand Mr.'Whitfield and his wifo (Miss Dorothy Finnan) have visited England, where tho former met Messrs. J. C. Williamson and Gcorgo Tallis, nnd discussed matters respecting the present pantomime. . Mr. G. A. M'Donald, of Wcstport, has, says a Wanganui Press Association telegram, been appointed engineer to tho Gonvilie Town Board. Mr. Ritchie was yesterday re-elected chairman of tho Wanganui Hospital nnd Charitable Aid Board.—Press Association.
