RAVAGES OF RED DEER.
Dunedin, .Tune 3. A deputation, representing the Otago Acclimatisation Society, waited upon the Hon. It. D. Bell to-day for the purpose of soliciting Government assistance to cull tho red (leer herds in tho back-country between Lindis aiul Lake Hawea. Tho Minister, after hearing the deputation, remarked that: it had been stated that deer were hurting small farmers, many of whom were complaining of dopredniions in turnip and other crops. The Government olhcers had already taken the matter under consideration, and, although lie thought, personally, that the Government would have to attend to the matter, he could give no promise that such a course would be adopted. He was not. prepared to say whether the work could be done best by tho society or tho Government, but, from what had come under his notice in the North Island, lie thought llint the Government would have to go into the matter in a scientific way. It Was not a ITuwea or Wnitaki question, but applied to the titer herds al! over New Zealand. The matter would receive his careful attention.
