The iirst visitors wero those of tho ollicial party, ami welcoming speeches wero made by the Mavor of 13luli' (Mr. lliiichey), the Mayor" ol' lnvercargill. (Mr. M'l\u'iane), the president of the Navy League (Mr. 1\ E. Watson), .Ah-. J. A. Haiiiin, M.P., ami tho president of the Overseas Club (.Mr. MeludVy). Captain Halsey, in reply, said that tho children of tho Dominion were receiving an object-lesson which would do good in tho cause of Eainire. About twelve thousand people from all parts of Southland visited the Mull' to see the battleship. Arrangements had been made to enable tho school children to be taken out on tendering steamers, and this worked well for several hours;. Early in the'afternoon,. however, tho crowd at the wharf burst'tho barriers and rushed the wharf and steamers. This resulted in ennsiderablo delay, and on tho Tutanekai (ha hose was turned on tho gangway to keepthe invaders back. The weather through' out the day was showery, but on tho whole tho arrangements made for handling the crowd worked fairly well. Tho battleship sailed , westward through tho straits in tho evening, giving a brilliant searchlight display, which was visible from Invcrcargill.
