HOCKEY GALA. PALMERSTON THE TOP TEAM. tourney results. CAPITAL DAY AT KARORI PARK. The six-a-side tournament promoted by the Wednesday Hockey Association for -men's and ladies' clubs, held at tlio Ivarori Recreation Grounds yesterday afternoon, wasa very successful affair. The number of spectators constituted quits a record for tlio new grounds, and ths games provided plenty of excitement. Altogether it was. a capital day. Thirty games were playod during the day, and the very creditable' arrangements allowed these to bo all got off to schedulo time. A visiting team—Palmerston North P. and T—wero successful in carrying off the senior men's competition, and in tho junior contest Hutt Valley won out in a good "final" With St. Augustine's. Tho ladits' games —especially tho deciding game between Girls' College and Victoria College—occasioned the introduction of some quaint war cries by the respective sides' supporters, and an interesting competition was won by Girls' College. The members of the winning men's teams each receive a -gold medal, and the Girls' College players will be honoured for their line win by emblematic gold brooches. The scores were counted on a basis of three points for a goal and ono for a penalty.

First Round.—Petone boat Government Insurance by 1 to nil; Patella beat Vicoria College by 7 to 6. The Final.—Tno Petonn and P. .and T., I'almerston, were left to fight out the inal. The following were the teams:— Palmerston North P. and I'.: Hammer, 3rump, Amos, Cooksley, Hancock, Kersake. Petone: Martin, Hartlev, Pointon, r. MTSwan, W. MTEwan, Cavill. The pace was made a cracker from tho start, and Palmerston had a goal on after >nly a few minutes' play, Amos doing tho scoring. Petone retaliated in kind soon ifterwards, however, when after a fruitless shot from a corner J. M'Ewan got tho ball m the rebound and sent in a splendid shot. The spell saw no alteration to the jven tally. Petone were prominent early in tho second spell, and a penalty came to them after some hot play round the Palmerston circle. The -country- tcani *radually worked themselves out of their jwn quarter, and, combining wisely, were' on the way to a.score when Petone were; penalised for an infringement. The Final—The ' play-oft was between Girls' Collego and' Victoria College, and the following were tho teams:—Victoria College—Misses Newman, M'Auliffe, Dace, Arthur, AVallace, and Campbell. Girls' College—Misses Wood, Laurenson, Hicks, Williamson, Garland, and Mellor. Girls' College mado it evident from the "bully" that they were the more vigorous team of tho two. Both teams had had eomo very fast play in the other games, but notwithstanding this, the exhibition was really good, and interesting. The University girls wore sent back very soon after, commencing, and following some good play by the College girls, Miss Imurenson was seen gliding along tho left line, and going on alone, she shot a maguificont goal.' ' College were defending for a littlo after this, but although the Greens looked dangerous at times, the spell ended without another score. Tho second half was chiefly in Girls' College's favour, and 'ho play 0 of little .Miss Laurenson was ieally splendid.
