(Prom Our Spocial Correspondent.) * CASE OF WILFUL DAMAGE. At th's Lower Hutt Court yesterday morning tho caso of a young man named John Quinn was before Mr. W. C. James, J.P., the ihargo being ono of wilfully damaging a window in tho Bellevuo Hotel. Accused, who did not appear, was ordered to pay damages, 205., in default seven days' imprisonment, STATE EMPLOYEES. Mr. T. Townsend, of Petone, who recently addressed a public meeting 011 the question of civil and political rights for Stato employees, lias received a communication from the Prime Minister stating that after his Teturn from Auckland, he will receive a, disputation as requested by Mr, Townsend. ' THE HUTT PARK. A meeting of the Hutt Park Committee was held last evening, and was attended by Messrs. Baldwin, Hodgins, Wright, Hobbs, Brockelbank, TownSsnd, and Pliypers. Mr. Baldwin was elected chairman, and accepted offico pro tem. He stated that he had had sis years' service on tho committer, and it was only proper that the Hutt Borough Council should desiro to control their own affairs.
The question of electing a secretary was held over, it being agreed to ask the Pietone town clerk to undertake the duties of the position. Mr. Ward (Gracefield Estate) waited on the committee and requested them to make over to him a strip of land which would enable him to comply with the wishes of tin? City Council in regard to the formation. of the road between thn Waiwetu bridge and the Day's Bay Eoad. In support of his request, Mr. Ward stated that at s present the road would be dangerous for traffic, but if this land was acquired the approaches would be better. The chairman pointed out that the committee had no power to give the land, but they could support action by the Wellington City Council in tho direction of acquiring the land by proclamation. It was resolved to visit tho locality before giving a decision.' Mr. Burridge asked that his 6heep (at present grazing on the park) should be allowed to faed in the lenced-off parts, as feed was now getting short. —Resolved, that tho slieep lie allowed inside..the enclosure at the discretion of tho caretaker.
The Hutt Valley Trotting Club wrote asking the committee to fix a. date suitable td receive a deputation with a view to reopening negotiations for the right to hold race meetings on. the park. It was decided to invite representatives of the Hutt Valley Trotting Club to attend at rc?xt meeting of the committee, and also to invite them to meet the committee on tho park. In his report, the caretaker stated that there was.a danger of visitors to ths? park being struck with golf balls from players who do not play on tho links. Complaint had been made to the golfe secretary, but tho trouble continued. It was resolvted to inform the Golf Club that unless this practice was discontinued further action, would be taken.
The caretaker was granted an increase in wasjos as from Juno 1. On the motion of the chairman, it was decided to ask tho Hutt and Petone Borough Councils to make a progress payment of JCIO leach. BOWLING CLUB. The annual general meeting of the Petone Bowling Club is to be held on June 20. SUMMONED FOR RATES. A number of cases in which residents are being sued for rates will be hea,rd at the Petone Magistrate's Court on Wednesday, June 18. FIRE AT PETONE. At 8.45 last evening a fire broke out at No. 10 Victoria Street, Petone, the premises being a four-roomod cottage owned by Mr. Parrant, and occupied by Mr. S. 8. Johnson. Despite the efforts of the Gear Company's brigade, who arrived first on the scene, and the town brigade, tho building was completely .putted; but the brigades were successful in- koeping the outbreak. from spreading to the surrounding properties. As uie occupants wero absent at tho time, the cause of the firo is not known. Tho building and'contents were\ insured, the former for but tho covering offices are not known.
The Lower Hutt Hibernian Society held a successful social evening last evening in tho local Lyceum Hall. In the early part of the evening a progressive euchro tournament took place, the prizes being iron by Miss Nora Nazor and Mr., Nizor. Supper and a dance followed. FOOTBALL "SOCIAL." St. David's Association football team, who are playing a match witfi St. Andrew's football team, of Palmer6ton North on the Petone Recreation Ground to-day, entertained . their visitors last night at a "social" in tho schoolroom. SKATING RINK. There waa a fair crowd of Tinkers at the Hutt Rink last evening, who all spent a good time on tho rollers. On Thursday night the chief attraction will bo a hoop raoe. At the! Lyceum 'theatre, Petone, last night, the Wizard of the North" (Professor Boyd) gave a capital conjuring performance. The proceeds, which amounted to about £12, will lie handed over to the Petone \Fire Brigade sports fund. '
