LACROSSE.

CAPITOL DOWNED BY • KELBURNE.

Favoured by ideal weather, and with tho grounds in splendid condition, the concluding matches of tho first round of tho Proud Clip competition were played nt tho Basin Reserve on Saturday afternoon. ' The surprise of tho afternoon was tho defeat of tho hitherto unbeaten Capitol team by Kelburne, who achieved their first victory this season. Columbia won from Wellington by 7 goals to 3, and thus secured cup points making them level with Capitol. KELBURNE k CAPITOL. From the commencement, tho Ivelburne team attacked strongly, whilst their defence, which had been strengthened by uio inclusion of ICershaw (goal) and Proud (point) 'kept tho Capitol attack at bay. Tho first two quarters showed Kelturno in the supremacy with a tally of three goals to one. In the concluding stages, Capitol reasserted themselves, and attacked vigorously, increasing their score to' three goals, obtained from the crosses of Hubbard and Renkin. Kelburne notched another goal, and left the field victors by 4 goals to 3, after an exceedingly well-con-tested match in which there were at times good exhibitions of passing, stick-work, and checking. A word of praise must bo given to the Kelburne defence, Canty and Jordan, besides Kershaw (who effected many "ood saves in goal), and Proud (who did effective work),' whilst Jones, Hume, Halligan, and Hutton showed to advantage on the attack.' Capitol were ably led by R-enkin, Andrews, Comrie, and Turner. Mr. P. J. M'Govern was referee. ' ' COLUMBIA k WELLINGTON. Judging by the scoring which Columbia j did in the first quarter of this match, there was likelihood of an overwhelming defeat of Wellington, but the gamo was more evenly contested in the second and third quarte>s, and was more in favour of Wellington in the last quarter than tho result of 7 goals to 3 would indicate. Tho Blacks' tally in the first quarter was four goals, which were obtained more by tho individual effort of the scorersCasey (2), Leydon, and Grant—than by tho customary combined play of this trio, Wellington, after some good passing between Firth, Bowen, Davis, and Lees, scored once in the second quarter, Casey rsfllyincr with two further goals for Columbia. On resuming after half-time, Wellington attacked strongly, Ryder being conspicuous, as were also some of tho younger players—Woods, Rountree, and "Abel. The Columbia defence was hard pressed time after time, and on the whole performed creditably, although the Wellington attack did not seem to be marked closely enough. Thomas effected some good saves in-goal. and with Quinn, White, and Baker (generalled by O'Leary). succceded in preventing Wellington from scoring more than twice again. Some young players on Columbia attack shape'd promisingly, notably 'Bishop and Gallagher. Columbia's last goal was obtained by Leydon, making the total of seven for the Blacks against three for Wellington. Mr. H, Blackman was referee. DISPLAY MATCH. The Wellington Lacrosse Association has authorised the playing of a challenge match between a team of "Pioneers' and "Present" ' players. Many : experienced locrosseurs (who are not playing now in cup matches) will appear in this match, and as two first-class tennis will be engaged, an attractive exhibition of tho Canadian game should be witnessed. The match will be played at the Basin 'Reserve oil Tuesday morning.
