Colonel Redl, who committed suicide when about to lo arrested on charges of immorality and selling secrets to the Russian Government, is now known to have received a sum of i£loo,ooo for Btolen war secrets, including a plan for the cc-operatlon of tho German and Austrian

armies, , Colonel Redl's treachery was discovered by accident, when Lieutenant Jandric was arrested on a charge of espionage. His papers included a letter from th© chief of ft foreign espionage bureau, directing him to receive letters from Redl and also a cipher. This was used for a telegram summoning Redl from Prague to Vienna. Redl immediately went, the detectives following him. The authorities are criticised for failing to suspect tho origin of the large sums Ml had been spending. He received -£10,000 for last winter's work. Throughout tho crisis he enabled Russia to reply to the movements of the Austrian forces: The Russian movements, in fact, sometimes anticipated the Austrian plans. Three arrests havo been made in Vienna and others are expected. Lieutenant Jandric has been sentenced to imprisonment for life in a fortress.
