"MAN OVERBOARD."
SUICIDE AT SEA. On Saturday afternoon, while the 5.9. PapaToa waa approaching Wellington, a bnssonger named James H. Fish committed suicide by jumping overboard. Fish was a native of Clydebank, Glasgow, and was 63 years of age. Ho was on his way to Now Zealand to join two eons in Auckland. Ho had kept' very much to himself on the voyage out. and was described as being of a reserved disposition, with strong religions feelings. Nothing in his conduct indicated that he intended to make away with himself. Tho deed was committed shortly after 1! o'clock on Saturday afternoon, and many passengers saw tho man leap over tho side into the sea. Thew> was a fairly plioppy sea on at the time. The fourth officer at on&o threw a lifebuoy over from tho stern of the ship, but Fish made no attempt to reach this when lie rose. ■Within six minutes of tho cry "Man overboard!" Chief Officer Wynward was away with a crew in charge of the emergenoy boat, and oveTy offort was made to rescue tho unfortunate man. Tho chief omcer camo in for much praiso for the smartness with which he got the rescno boat away. The ship's dootor, Dr-. Young, also accompanied the boat. ■ ' „,, The Paparoa stood by tho scene of tne tragedy for several hours, but Fish s body was not recovered. , ■ , There wore two other deaths on the vojago out, both occurring ,b<rfoTO the ship: reached Capo Town. On April 23 William. Millbourno, 50, a seaman, of London, to from tho roof of tho ofiicers house and : struck an iron crane. His 'skull was nactured, and ho died within two hours. On 'April 27 a passenger named Geo. he Sireur, 81, a native of London. who ha been suffering from melancholia, died from heart failure. The bodies wero buried at. jea. '
