BATTLESHIP PASSES ON. (By Telegraph— Press Association.) Oamaru, May 30. Although' it is fine otherwise, a strong westerly-driven sea provented H.il.S. New Zealand anchoring, and it looks as though to-day's arrangements will havo to be cancelled. The vessel is just" discernible'away oil the horizon. About 10 o'clock tho Mayor received' a wireless messago via Bluff, stating-'that tho sea was too rough, but tho battle-' cruiser would hang round for a while'to boo if it moderated. Sonio time after the warship was lost to view, and it is surmised Captain Halsey has had to abandon the Oamaru trip. There is keen disappointment,- especially on tho part of a largo number of young people, who were not permitted to see the vessel at Lyttelton. It was the intention of the Mayor and councillors to entertain Captain Halsey at luncheon, and during tho afternoon the Captain was to unveil a momorial tablet to the Antarctic heroes at Waitaki High School. _ . , Later. Mr. B. M. Wilson, General Manager of the Tourist Department, arrived this morning by tho Tutanckai to represent the Government at tho reception of H.M.S. New Zealand. Mr. Wilson received a message from Captain Halsey to the effect that the sea was too rough for tho Tutanckai and Hincmoa to take tho children round tho warship. In order to lessen the disappointment Mr. Wilson offered on behalf of. tho Government .to contribute towards tho cost of entertaining tho children at a picnic in tho gardens. Tho Now Zoaland proceeded south. arrangements at dunedsn. Dunedin, May 30.' The New Zealand is expected to bo at anchorago off Otago Ileads at 0.30 tomorrow. Complete arrangements havo boon made for tho conveyance of representative citizens, school children, and tho general public to tho worship if the conditions aro favourable. The sea ia rather heavy to-night, and unless the conditions.improve in the meantime-tho chunces of anyone getting on board tho warship aro not good. 3f a landing call bo effected, Captain Halsey will bo accorded an official reception in the afternoon. Tho weather outlook for to-morrow is not promising.
