AND MARCONI CONTRACT.

At the trial of Mr. Cecil Chestertoa, editor of tlio "Eye Witness," summoned for libelling Mr. Godfrey Isaacs, whom ho accused of corruptly conspiring in regard to tlio Marconi wireless contract witli the Attorney-General (Sir Rufus Isaacs) and the Postmaster-General (Mr. Herbert Samuel), the three being described as malefactors, Sir Itufus Isaacs (Attorney-General), gave evidence as to his dealings with Mr. Harry Isaacs. They had not had the slightest effect on the contract between the Marconi Company and the Post Office. He did not think to-day that his conduct had been indiscreet, nor did ho consider that he should have told the House of Commons everything. Ho added that he bad nothing to do with the present prosecution.

Mr. Godfrey Isaacs, Chairman of the Marconi Company, denied that he ever influenced anyone, or that he ever conversed with Sir Rufus Isaacs on the subject of the contract. BEN TILLETT A DEFENDANT. ,£IOOO DAMAGES. London, May 29. George Balfour, an engineers' employee, and Unionist candidate for the Govan seat at the last Parliamentary election, sued the "Glasgow Daily Record" and Ben Tillett for libel. He alleged that Tillett circulated amongst newspapers allegations regarding Balfour's responsibility for a strike. The case was settled by tho payment of a thousand pounds damages. THE ATTACK ON MR. BOOSEVELT. TESTIMONY AS TO SOBER HABITS. (Rec. May 30, 11.20 p.m.) New York, May 30. In the libel suit at Mirquetto, Michigan, where Mr. Roosevelt is proceeding against George Newett, newspaper publisher,. for accusing him of drunkenness during the Presidential campaign. Mr. J. R. Garfield (formerly Secretary for the Interior), Mr. W. Loeb, jun. (who was secretary to ilr. Roosevelt when President), Mr. 13(1 ward Heller (a naturalist who accompanied the Roosevelt African hunting expedition), and several newspaper men testified to Mr. Roosevelt's sober habits.
