The ancient words port and starboard were from April 15 banished from tlio American Navy. Coming down, from ancient sailormen, and rich in the associations of song and story, they must yield to the common sense of this practical age. They are (says tho "Now York Times") not modern. Their usefulness is past. They do not fit the ship in tluse days of electric steering gear. Plain and clear as their meaning lias been to the helmsmen of the past, they are now regarded as confusing, and 1:1 the crucial hour of battle might b? the straw's weight that would cost victory and so perhaps change the whole course of history.' That is the .view of those who conduct tnc.navnl administration of the Government. "Starboard" and "port" are hereafter to be simply "right" and "left," and the words apply to the helm and not to'tiie rudder or the ship's head. Thus the man at the helm ivill have only the words' of tho officer's command to hear and obey. Tho matter has been the subject of prolonged study by tile General Board. On the liixil vote eight membc-rs of the General Board voted to do away with the old words, and 0110 voted that they should be retained.
As was stated a few weeks ago there is dissatisfaction among some members of the City Council as to the method by which the standing committors were appointed, although the method was the regular one, and quite in order. At Thursday's meeting Councillor Tregear moved that resolutions setting up all tho committees bo rescinded, but the discussion was not concluded when the' council resolved to adjourn. In the course of the debate, however, Councillor Fletcher mado an interesting announcement. Ho is not nominally a, .member,, of ~the . present Finance Committee, but he claims that ho has a right to sit on that committee, and he announced that he will attend at next meeting. Four years ago. the present Mavor, then Councillor Luke, moved that all'chairmen of standing committees sit as members of the Finance Committee, and the motion was carried. Councillor Fletcher is now chairman of the Markets Committee, a standing committee, and he claims that under the resolution lie is a member of the Finance Committee. ■ It inav bo mentioned that he did not exercise'the right, which lie now claims, last vear when he was chairman of tlio Markets Committee, and also that when the resolution was pas.-od by the council there was no municipal fish market and no Markets Committee. At the weekly practice of tho Welling(ou Choral Society last evening, Mr. 14. T Cnldow, addressing tlio members, said that' ho desired to refer to a rumour which had been circulated with regard to Mr. Christian Hellemana, the. ooniluctor of the society.
