THE CHAMPIONS BEATEN. London, May 20. Edward Kay, the open champion, Braid, White, Gaudiu the Frenchman, and Herd have all been beaten in the annual competition for the cup presented by the proprietors of "The Sphere." Braid was outdone by Gadd, a comparatively unknown Welsh golfer. Kay, on occasions, drove magnificently. At the sixth hole, 2SO yards, he placed the ball with his tee shot within 3ft. of the pin. There are 198 entrants for the amateur championship to be played at St. Andrews on Monday, including tho Hon. Michael Scott.

John Hall, the present holder of the title, sprained his right wrist and ail ankle in a motor-cycl? accident, but sliil hopes to bo able to defend his title.—Sydney "Sun."
