HUTT AND PETONE NEWS.
(From Our SdooI&I Correspondent.) e _ ANTI-ALIEN MOVEMENT. For some time past the Hutt and Potone European fruiterers and greengrocers have, it is stated, suffered considerably in their business, owing to the cutting of prices initiated by the local Chinese in the same line of business.
In conversation with a reporter yesterday, a Hutt Valley fruiterer stnteel thai under existing conditions it was almostimpossible to get a living. "Women," he added, "will always go to a Chinaman in preference to a white man. Indeed, ifs not so very long ago since a lady went into a European fruiterer's shop and asked to to- directed to the nearest Chinese fruit shop. That was beyond a joke," concluded tho fruiterer.
It i 9 understood that a meeting will probably bo held at both Lower Hutt and Petono shortly, for tho purpose of forming an anti-Chinese League in the valley.
In justice to the women, it must bo pointed out that at one time only Chinamen went out with hawking carts. Now, however, Europeans nre vending their goods,_ and the Chinese element in this .direction is not so' strong.
PETONE BOWLING CLUB. By way of winding up last season, the Petono Bowling Club held a promenade concert and dance in tho Victoria Street Hall last night. About eighty members and their friends attended, including the president cf Lower Hutt Bowling Club, Mr. Hollanl, Mr. £. P. Risliworth, secretary, and a number of Hutt bowlers.
In his opening remarks, the president (if the Petono Club extended a welcome to those present, and said that although the entertainment was a departure from past years, - the number present assured the success of such a function. On behalf of the club, lie wished all present an enjoyablo time. Concluding, flic president paid a tribute to Mr. E. J. Hill, whom he stated was responsible for tho musical portion of the programme. Dancing was indulged in, punctuated with musical items given by: Mrs. Kcholes, Miss M'Ewen, Miss llughes, Miss Zita Chapman, Messrs. Schmidt and E. J. Hill. An apology was received from Mr. T. M. Wilford, M.P.
An excellent supper was provided by the club and supervised by the ladies.
Messrs. R. Firth and D. G. M'Ewen acted as M.C.'s, and Mrs. Pollock was responsible for the danco music, whilst Miss Hill played the accompaniments. During the supper interval the prizes won during last season were presented by the president as follow •—Champion singles (Wilford Cujj) : R. Firth, 1; 1!. F. Smith, 2. Champion pairs: R. Wvlie and E. Jones, 1; W. Hay and W. Ronnie, 2. Handicap pairs: H. J. Palmer and T). S. M'Ewen, 1; E. Battersby and 11. Brooks, 2. Progressive tourney: R. Firth (skip) and H. Allen (lead).
