CIVIC AFFAIRS.
CITY COUNCIL MEETING. The ordinary meeting of the City Council was held last night. Tliero were present tho Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke), and Councillors It. Fletcher, J. E. Fitzgerald, A H. Hindmarsh T. C. A. Hislop, It. a. " right, It, T. Luckie, E. Tregear. J. Fuller, L. M'Kenzie, W. J, Thompson, A. . Atknson, H. ■ Buddie, J. Godbcr, and G. Frost.
Iho Ivavy League was granted tho use of tho Town Hall on the afternoon of Jiino 13 for the sum of ,£3,
lhe Wellington City Band was granted permission to give a performance in Newtown Park on Sunday, .Tuno 7, with leave to take up a collection, subject to tho usual conditions. The council's consent not to be taken as a precedent for future applications. It was decided to grant the Mitchelltown School Committee a lease, from year to year, terminable by six months' notice at tho end of tho second or any subsequent year, of part of Lot G. of Town Belt, subject to tjio following conditions:—(l) The gorso to be cleared off the section at the rate of two acres per annum; (2) the rent to be M per annum; (3) ■ city rates to be paid; (4) the public to have full right of entry on. the land. ■
The council decided to instal electric light points in the Lyall Bay Surf Club's rooms at Lyall Bay Beach, the club to pay for tho current consumed. An offer to sell to the council tho Pj-nscnt Estate at Hobson Streot was not entertained.
A request from the residents of Upland Road for tho formation of privato means of access to their houses above Upland Road, Kelburne, was not acccdod to. The Outlying Districts Committee, reporting on a petition from tho residents of Overtoun Terrace, ICilbirnie, _ asking for various improvements, including formation of footpaths, kerbing, etc., stated (on the authority of tho city engineer) that the construction of the footpath was tlio only necessary work to bo considered at present, and that it was intended to includo this work in the current year's estimates, when tho extension of tho storm-water drain would also bo put in hand. With regard to a petition from the residents of Keubcn Avenue, Brooklyn, referred to them by tho council at the last meeting, the committee recommended that all the owners of property having frontages to Reuben Avenue bo communicated with in order to ascertain tho total maximum contribution that such owners would be prepared to pay towards placing the street in good order. iho city engineer ostiuinted the total cost of tlie work to foe -€420. ' Tho reports were adopted.
