DISQUALIFI ED FOR LIFE. ' SAVORY INCIDENT INQUIRY." (Ey Telegraph.—Special Correspondent.) Auckland, Hay 2!). An interesting position has arisen in Northern Union football circles in. connection with what is known as the Savory incident. To relate some of the history of the case, it appears that after the first grado match at Onehung.i between Pcnsonby United and Manukau Rovers, the latter club's delegate to the Auckland league reported an incident in. which Savory (the Ponsonby captain) was alleged to have deliberately^kicked'Clark, an opponent. The referee in the game had not reported the matter, and stated when called upon that he wals a considerable distance away when thb foul play was alleged to have taken place, and was unable to eay what had occurred. Tho Protest Committee. of the Auckland League was instructed to hold au inquiry into the matter. At last night's meeting of tho Auckland League, the committee reported that after two hours' deliberation, when all ths evidence had been taken, it had been found that Savory had been guilty of kicking Clark, and had caused such injuries to this player as necessitated his removal to tho hospital. On the motion of Mr. Parker (chairman of the Protest Committee), seconded by Mr. Cliilds, it was decided that the., linding of the committee be accepted und adopted. Mr. R. M'Donald, a member of tho Protest Committee and the Ponsonby Club delegate on the League, said ho considered that the evidenco taken in committee should be made public. Ho believed in everyone getting a square deal, and ho thought that the referee's evidenco had been ignored in favour of that of spectators. Mr. Parker then moved that Savory 1m disqualified for life. Mr. Cliilds (Manukau delegate) seconded the motion. As nn amendment, Mr. M'Jlonald moved that Savory bo stood down for one day from the date of the incident, Mr. A. Murdoch seconding. Before this was put to tho meeting I>y the chairman (Mr. Barry Brigham), Mr. T. Long gave notice to move for a twelve months' disqualification in tile event of Mr. M'Donald's Amendment being lost. On a ballot being taken, tlio voting resulted: —For life, It; for a day, 3. Tho voting on Mr. Long's amendment was:— For life, S; for a year, (i. On the original motion being put to tho_ meeting it was carried. While the Auckland League meeting was in progress, tho New Zealand Council was making final arrangements for the tour of its representatives, Savory being among-the number. As soon as a decision was reached by the Auckland League verbal intimation of the. result was given to the New Zealand Council. Mr. Po.well, tho Auckland Leaguo representative on the Neiv Zealand Council, then waited on the League, and pointed out that Savory had already been selected, had signed the agreement, and from tho official point of view had "gone to Australia." He asked that Mr. Brigham (chairman), Mr. Hunt (secretary), and Mr. Murdoch (treasurer) should meet tho council at once to discuss tho matter, but the meeting decided that it would give formal written notice of its decision to disqualify Savory 'for life. This was done, and the Auckland members as requested then went into committee with the New Zealand Council. It was pointed out that tho Auckland League have really power only to suspend a player, and tecomrnend that the New Zealand Council confirm tho sentence. However, the council then decided that, as Savory had been suspended, he could not possibly accompany tho team to Australia. Subsequently, a notification was received by the- council that Savory would- lodge an appeal with the New Zealand Leaguo against the sentence, in which case the council will tako a complete rehearing of the evidence. Savory is still suspended until confirmation of tho disqualification or othenviso by the New Zealand Council. J. Hogan (Wanganui) has been asked to go in placo of Savory.
