NOTES AND COMMENTS.

ißy Glencoe.l - ■ To-night at 8 o'clock nominations close for tho Winter meeting of the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club. Excellent acceptances have resulted from Huudicapper Pollock's adjustments for tho Otaki meeting, which takes place ou Tuesday aud Wednesday nest. I'ourtcen horses havo paid up in the Cup and eighteen in the ltahui Handicap. Tho otiier events have also filled well. So far there hns been v£ry little rain at Otaki, and yesterday morning the track work was got oft' on perfect going. If tho weather is anything like fair, a record' gathering is anticipated". The totalisaxor staff has been increased, and all arrangements arc well in hand. Tho attention of patrons is drawn to the excellent train service, and two fast "specials" have boon arranged for the convenience of Wellington sportsmen. "Undecided, Ost. (E. Hatch), is one of tho well-fancied division in the Kaukawa Cup. Others likely to come in for solid support on Tuesday are: Byron, Bst. 81b. (B. Deeley); Peroneal, Sst. Dlb. (C. Emerson); and Leontft, Sst. 2lb. (W. Price). J. W. Lowe shipped Obligant homo to Gisbonio by the Maitai, which sailed last ovoning. Tho bay horse is to bo turned out, and his fore logs do not suggest that he will ever race again.

Sir George Clifford and Mr. A. Sellars, of the Pacing Conference, were in town yesterday to attend a Conference Commifctea nutating. They TeOurned south last evening. At Blenheim, A. Pore is working Killaloo, Panthea, Indra, and a rising two-year-old, but none of tho quartet will be required to race again this season. A new arrival in Blenheim, who is anxious to join the ranks of owners, has lately been negotiating for tbo purchase of Achilledes (Achilles—Dexterity). Tho chestnut liorso is a likoly sort that should iniprovo with age.

On Saturday last Gay Lawless was responsible for a schooling gallop over live fences at Trentham, and gavo a very finished display of fencing. C. Pritcliaril is sending her and Sir Moutoa to Otaki on Monday morning.

. J. W. Lowe is not racing any of his te_am_ until tho winter meeting of tho Wellington Pacing Club, when Mira will be raced in both the 'Parliamentary Handicap and Winter Oats. The Trentham trainer also intends giving tlio JUedoniiui colt and Charleroso a run in tho Trial Plate. The gallop nut up by Flingot and Idealism at Ellerslie yesterday was a good one, and will have tho effect of bringing theso horses into tho market for tho Great- Northern Hurdles, to l«3 run to-morrow. Mr. H. M. Campbell's horse has been daintily handled by tlra weight adjuster, and if the stout fences do not find him out, the old Musketry gelding should be in the fighting line. C. Emerson is to ride Peroneal and Allcar in the Otaki double. B. Declcy will lie on Byron and Makara. W. Price will be on Looiita and Inouru, and W. Bell on Dearest and To Kahurangi. J. M'Cltiskey will ride Glcnfinnan and Scottish Star in their Dunedin engagements. Emerson's retainer to do Sir Geo. Clifford's ridine has not yet expired, but

ho has been given permission to attend the Ellcrslie and Otaki meetings. The prereneo of Nylaiul in the Hack Hurdles at Otaki will add interest to that event. Trainer G. Prico was agreeably surprised at the weight allotted the Winter Cup winner, and it is said that ho expected fully a slonc more. Jlr. W. j\idd, owner of Peroneal, journeyed to Otuld on Monday, to see his mare gallop. lie says the Otaki tracks are in great order, and it would take a !«(• of rain to make tlieni heavy for the racing next week. For ,«omo time past the case of Hector Gray, who was disqualified by the Damievirke Club in March, 1012, and who subsequently had two further sentences of four months added to his term, has been ' occupying the attention of the Taranaki Metropolitan body, for it is claimed on behalf of Grav that the Taranaki Club, which imposed tho second four months, had not the power under the Rules of Placing to do so. The question has been submitted to the conference, but so far its decision has not been made known. Most people will agree that the ends of justice would bo well served if Gray was allowed to resume riding at the end of, say. 1G months. That would be tho original 12 m.onth'3 and one additional four months. Tho Taranaki jockey's abilities as a horseman are so highly thought of that- already he has had the offer of threo retainers in the ovtnt of his being ielicensed. Wnikehna has been accepted for in both the Birthday and Welter Handicaps nt the Dunedin meeting, but the general opinion is that ho will start in the big handicap, and Waipunui will represent tho stable in the welter. Mr. J. E. Henrys, haudicapper to the Dunedin Jockey Club, went south by tho Mannganui last.evening, to be present at the winter meeting of that club.
