Sir Beerbolvm Tree and Mr. -Tlionns Beechani havo produced Strauss's opera, "Ariadne in Naxos" at His Majesty's Theatre. It is a new departure to hear of grand opera being produced at Her Majesty's Theatre, London, and that in conjunction with Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree, ill the middle of the Covent Garden season. Sir Herbert Tree usually devotes his timo and theatre to the higher drama and comedy, and would only be associated with Strauss's complex opera "Ariadne in Naxos," in the capacity of producer, in which department ho is a master. Mi. Thomas Beecliam is a well-known figure in musical circles in London. Two years ago he set up in rivalry to Covent Gulden, and produced a repertoire of grand opera in English, having Mr. Thomas Quintan (now of the Quinlan Opera Co.) as manager. Mr. Bcecham, who is a capable musician, and an able conductor, is a son of tho manufacturer of Beecliam s pills. Richard Strauss, whose wort "Ariadne" lias now been performed for the first timo in London, i<= tho composer of "Salome" and "Elektra."
