Mr. If. J. Robinson said that some years ago ;i sum of .£750 had been "plncod oil the estimates by the council for tlio construction, of a swimming bath in. Brooklyn, but the money had not been available. Kucouragcd by tho advocacy by the Mayor in recent election addresses I for baths for tho district, the deputation j now asked that tlio vote be restored to the estimates, and that a bath be built on a sito opposite the school. Ho was sure the batli would bo much appreciated, and that it would be a source of proiit to tho city. Mr. A. D, Hobble spoke of the need foi a' recreation ground, saying that tho district, the most densely populated in all the city, was the only 0110 without a playing ground of any sort. If a field were laid out in Brooklyn, on tho sito proposed near (Jhiro Road, it would bccome a central one for the whole of the city. Hitherto the objection rais«l bad been that of expense, but he believed that the council was going to acquire steam navvy, and if the estimate were revised 011 tlio basis of steam digging he believed tho expenses would not bo too heavy. Ho also urged that the new road to Brooklyn along a more easy gradient should bo made \utli""jtr'k A?' J. White said ho wished to sneak of a matter of urgent iiecewity. There had been an outbreak of diphtheria ill Brooklyn, and all of tlio eases came from Happv Valley, down which ran a 'most objectionable open sewer. Tho sewet Cs, he urged, a menace to the health of tho distnet, and'lie thought the council should see that it was properly covered in without delay. , The Mayor, 111 reply, said that t.lO claims advanced by the doputnhon wowW have the eareful consideration of tie council. He believed tho, sewer wo" 1( l ,} ® attended to at once, but as to the otliei works he suggested that tlie residents agree amongst themselves a? "hey required most, for lie did not. 11 link the city's finances would be able to beai the strain of both.
