HARBOUR AFFAIRS.

MEETING OF THE BOARD

The monthly meeting of the Wellington Harbour Board was held last night. Thero were present Messrs. R. Fletcher (choirman), C. W. .Tone?, R. Nathan, W. Ilildreth, A. 11. Ilindniarsh, J. Trevor, M. Cohen, C. E. Daniell. A. MacFarlane, K. A, Wright, J. G. Cobbe, J. W. M Ewon, and Captain T). J. Watson. 1 Tho bank pass books showed credit balances as follow:—Current account, .£33,378: imprest account, -£920; on fixed deposit. iSO.OOO. Tho following payments were authorised:—Accounts and wages, .£13,111; progress payments on contracts, ,£1123; salaries for May,-.£977. The chairman reported that an arrangement had been made between the shipowners and the Wellington narbour Board on the one "part- and the Waterside Workers' Union on the other part to adopt the following hours for engagement of labour for a period from .May 7, 1913, to January 31, 1914, with, liberty to either • party to have same brought up for review after expiry of first three months:— Mondays to Fridays, 7.45 a.m. to 10 a.m.; 1 P.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays: 7.45 a.m. to 11 a.m. Mr. Fletcher further reported that ho had interviewed the Prime Minister witlv Tegard to the exemptions of charges on all Government cargo. The Prime Minister had promised to consider the matter, and had asked thnt he (Mr. Fletcher) i write to him suoplyiiig all the information possible. This had been done, and he (Mr. Flctcher) hoped some satisfactory arrangement would ensue. He had also spoken about the exemption from all dues of mail steamers. This, lie had represented, was a very serious matter to the principal boards of the Dominion. Last year the Wellington Board had lost .£ISOO owing to tho 'Frisco mail boats comine to Wellington free last .year. He was hopeful that some good would follow as the result of his representations. The chairman's report was adopted. It was decided, on tho recommendation, of the Wharves and Accounts Committee, to call for tenders, closing on June *o, for the supply of uniforms and uniform Cn The engineer's report and pl an iof suggested subdivision of portion of Waterloo Quay Reclamation North for leasing purposes was adopted.
