« — POPULAR AGITATION ON INTEREST--ING POINT. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Gisborne, May 28. A petition is, being forwarded by tonight's mail, through 111 - . W. D. S. Ma> Donald, M.1 1 ., to the MinisWr for Justice, praying for a hearing in open court before a magistrate appointed by the Department of an application by Mr. J. R. Quinn for a certificate of fitness in respect of the Record Reign Hotel. The petition is signed by heads of mercantile iirms, by a majority of the borough councillors, and by loading professional and business men, also by some of the members of the No-License party, and it is understood that the petition has the sympathy of leading members of that party Irehind it. The petitioners claim that, at the last hearing, the weight of evidence was clearly in favour of the granting of the application, and that, in view of Mr. Quinn s very high character and reputation, lio is a most suitable man to hold the license of the hotel. They urge that, in view of the fact that 'no appeal lies from tho decision of the magistrate, Mr. Quinn will bo resting under a grave injustice unless lie is given an opportunity of having a further application heard before a magistrate appointed by tho Department..
