THE DARWIN STRIKE.
ADMINISTRATOR'S ACTION. STRIKERS LEFT OUT IN THE COLD. By Telecraoh'-Preßs Association—Copyright (Rec. May 28, 8 p.m.) Darwin, May 28. The local branch of the Amalgamated Workers' Association, tho members of which aro employed by the Federal Government, has passed a resolution agreeing to return to work on conditiou that all the strikers are reinstated . The Administrator of tho Northern Territory (Dr. Gilruth) has refused to reinstate the members of the union and has wired the Federal Minister that since many of the positions have been filled and all the strikers did not return to work by a given time, they had been deemed to have resigned their positions.
Much curiosity is being evinced 'egarding the outcome of tho trouble.
[The strike commenced at' the beginning of tho month, the workers' demand being- for a ware of i£4 for a 44-hour week. Dr. Gilruth was willing to submit the dispute to arbitration, but tho Strike Committee rejected his offer. Some of tho men returned to work rather than risk losing their positions in the railway service. The carpenters returned, but objected to work with men who had broken away from tho union, and in consequence the objectors were summarily dismissed. Subsequently Dr. Gilruth stated that there was 110 strike as faT as the Government was concerned, and all vacancies in the service would be filled. The strikers stated that Mr. Thomas, the Federal Minister, of External Affairs, had made them a promise of a wage of lis. 3d. flaily.]
