SIR WALTER BUCHANAN.

A HIGH TRIBUTE. "I cannot conclude my opening address at this conference, held in the Wairarapa," said Mr. .T. G. AVilson, president of the Farmers' Union, at (lie opening of the annual conference at Maslertun yesterday, "without saying a word about my old friend Sir Walter Buchanan, whom 1 have known intimately for over thirty years. Ho has lately been singled out ior lionour. Those who knew him a.s a friend'and therefore know his worth, I'cel gratified that he .should have thus hsen singled out. It is an honour to tho farming profession as well as an honour to tho constituency he; represents. To lx> able merely to write tho word Knight after his name would mean little to our friend Sir. Walter, were it not acccmpanied by the feeling that amongst thoso who know him—and most people in New Zealand either know him personally or by repute—(hat in doing honour to him, honour is being done to the district which he has worked so strenuously to push forward. He Ims ever been a good friend to tho union; no deserving ease of assistance was ever put Wore him that, he did not help if he could; his generosity is proverbial. A warm friend and a good citizen, he has l»on fortunate in remainiug young and vigorous long after Anno Domini usually sets us aside. It waß a fortunate day for the Wairarapa when he camo (o settle in it, and I am sure there is not a man in tlm whole valley or coast but feels tho honour is richly deserved."
