LAND HUNGER.

AN APPEAL TO MR. MASSEY. In the course of a lotter addressed to the Prime Minister, Mr. Edwin Arnold, J.P., says:—"Tho land hunger in this country is so strong that the people cannot bo denied imicli longer. Our towns aro growing too largo for our population, while a great part of our country is lying idle. I put an advertisement ill tho paper for a young man to work in my factory. In a short time I had 42 applicants, all respectably-dressed men. I was sorry to seo such a number out of oiuployinent, and I am sure this state of things should not be in a young country like this. ... It is not a matter whether

. . . it is Conservatism, Liberalism, or Labourism—what we want is plenty of work for all . . . Now, I know many people aro looking: forward for Parliament to open, with tho Jiopo that you have something good for the people. What can you have better than a real Rood land policy, whence cometli nil riches. . . . I hope to fend word to tho newspapers I writo for (Mr. Arnold solids an occasional contribution to a paper circulating in Sussex, Surrey, and Kent) that you aro energetically settling the lands of our Dominion, ami tliat our exports aro likely to increase."

In the oonrse of his reply Mr. Mnssey said:— 1 "I notice with interest that you made n very important point of tho settlement on tlio land.; This is exactly what I am endeavouring; to do, and you will have seen that during tho last few weeks I have secured some hundreds of thousands of acres for settlement purposes, and which will bo available before many months are (rone. Settlement is proceeding very satisfactorily, and if we only keep up tho rate of progress, 1 feel certain there will bo ,a great increase in our exports during the next few years,"
