"CAN PAY, BUT DON'T."

THE SCRUTINY" OF HOSPITAL CASES. The fact that a mimlier of people do not pay for the attention they receivo in the Public Hospital caused some pointed remarks to bo made at last night's meeting of the Karori Borough Counoil.

ISseently, the Karori Council wrote to the Wellington Hospital and Charitablo Aid Board upon the subjcct of flip necessity for insisting upon payment by patients who can well afford to pay, but do not..

In the course of a letter in reply, the secretary of the Hospdtal Board (Mr. J. Coyle) said: "I have to point out that all patients admitted to the institution are liable for maintenance fees, and in no case are such fees remitted unless recommended to, the board by the Hospital Committee. Such accounts are carefully scrutinised and endorsed by two members of the committac."

"I am afraid the scrutiny is very perfunctory as to who is able to pay," remarked the Jlayot' of Karori (Mr. C. Cathie), after the letter was read. The Mayor said also that the scrutiny did not seem'ito be very effective, when only X-lOOfl out of .£20,000 was recovered.

"The pcoplo can't be so povertystricken. as all that," observed another councillor.
