HUTT BOROUGH COUNCIL.
Tho Lower Hutt Borough Council met last evening. Thoso present were tho Mayor' (Mr. E. P. Bunny), and Councillors Hobbs, Ball, Phypers, Parsonage Clendon, Meldrum, Dawson, and I£«mpthorne.
The Borough Engineor (Mr. W. T. Roche) reported that tho work of enlarging the borough reservoir was being proceeded with. The total cost of the work up till May 17 had been .£978 3s. Bd. So far 28 out of 37 chains of the gas main in King's Boad have been laid, at a cost of .£IBU 15s. lid. The total number of water connections to dato was 930, and a total of 773 permits had been issued under tho drainage and sanitary by-laws for house sewerago connections.
Tho report was adopted. As the council's representatives on tho Hutt l'ark Committee (-Messrs. Baldwin, Macaskill, and Barlow) had tendered their resignations, Messrs. Hodgins, Hobbs and Baldwin were appointed to fill tho vacancies. It was decided to forward a letter of thanks to the previous representatives.
Tho Valuer-General advised tho council that a sitting of tho Assessment Court would bo held at the .Magistrate's Court, Wellington, on Friday, May 30. The council received a voucher for J-'l from the Treasury, being the estimated cost of asphalting in front of the borough post oifice. It was resolved that Mr. F. Jenness continue his contract for the winding, etc., of the post office clock. Tho remuneration was fixed at i'2o per annum.
A letter was received bringing beforo the council's notice a certain system of lighting for street lamps. It was decided to seek information from towns where the system is in use. In regard to the agitation regarding the increased levies made on the various local bodies by the .Wellington Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, letters approving the council's .suggestion that a conference should bo held were received from Wellington City, Eastbourne, Levin. Karoi'i, Petone, Onslow, Makara, Hutt County, Johnsonville Town Board, Otaki Town Board, and Upper Hutt Town Board. "What is our position with respect to slips on the Hutt Hoail?" was the question put by Councillor Ball when a notification with respect to the Hutt Koad inquiry was being dealt with. "I expect tiiat we will have to contribute towards the expense." The Mayor Teplied that the slips were no doubt caused by the action of the Public Works Department in not leaving proper support to protect slides.
