THE FATAL PONTOON FIGHT.
JURY ACQUITS BROWN. (By Telegraph.—Prcoa Association.) , Auckland, May 20. A charge of manslaughter was heard at tlio Supremo Court to-day, before Mr. Justice Cobpor, npainst Harold Qluxlstono Brown, in connection with tlio fight on n pontoon on April 18, whereby Manuel Santos lost his life. Accused himself admitted fighting twico with Santos, tho fight on tho second occasion rcsultiug in his doatli. 110 disclaimed any intention of killing Santos.
His Honour remarked that the evidenco soemed to point to tho fact that tho second assault had been unprovoked. . He said that ho had no doubt that accused had no intention of killing Santos when ho pushed him overboard, but, nevertheless, tho jury would bo justified in finding that pushing Santos ( in tho water had accelerated tho latter'S death. To, accelerate a man's death was to commit manslaughter. Tho jury, after a retirement of an hour and a half, returned a vcrdict of | not guilty, and accused was discharged.
