NOTES ON THE RACING.

(By Telegraph— Special Correspondent.) Wanganui, May 21. ' The Wanganui meeting ended as it began, in glorious weather. Good racing was witnessed all day, but the favourites failed to materialise, and some .rank outsiders rolled home. The stipendiary stewards held an inquiry into a complaint by Mr. C. J. Parker against J. Conquest for not riding out Multiply in the Connolly Handicap. The complaint was dismissed. J. O'Shea was also brought up for his handling of Passadena in the Empire Handicap, and the stipendiary stewards reported that they were not satisfied with the display. Mr. IT. Cameron won the Steeplechase with Kauroa, and thus accounted for three cross-country events on the programme. When Ineiirn, the favourite in the Winter Oats, came into the paddock, it was noticeable that she had lightened up a good deal, and many stood off b?r in consequence. As the barrier lifted, she was' slow to move, while Makara and Gvattan jumped away cleanly. The favourite was noen up with them, and she and Grattan led reuud the bend .Makara, Katua, and Sanguinary. Entering the straight, th# leaders were hard at it, and Makaia ferged ahead, but o great run by. Sanguinary carried her right up. and she only failed by a head. Katua was third, and then cai'ffl Multiply. Grattan; and Itieuru. JCoaatjMA.iajt to leaw ths mirk, and to.

ran in the rear the whole way. Tho winner, met his field on a lot better terms than on the first day, and this accounted for him being second favourite. Munnner was again made a hot favourite in tho Balgownie Hack Race, but after a good finish with Kilrain he was beaten by a neck. Tho favourite stripped well, and it was plain that a race had done him good, but Kilrain was also in tne pink of condition, and had Young in the saddle. The Fordell horso had galloped well on Friday morning, and his supporters were very confident. A perfect start saw the two favourites get good positions passing the stand, but then Munnner took a jump clear of the others, and going past the six-furlongs had a good lead. At the half-mile Kilrain and Invader closed up, but tho favourite went on again. At the distance Kilrain joined in, and after a slashing finish, won by a neck. Austin was four lengths away, and then came Moirctte and St. Serf. The bracketed pair, The Native and Fireworks, wero in most demand on tho totalisator when it shut down for the Grandstand Steeplechase. Next in jiublic estimation cainc Leolanter and Kauroa. At the start'Hawick, fencing beautifully. set the pace, with Leolanter and Kauroa next, and The Native following. Hawick continued on in the lead till the big hencoop the second time round, when lie nearly came down, and Whimper, who was jumping badly all tho way, also lost a lot of ground. Kauroa now took the lead, and was chased by Leolanter, with The Native ten lengths away. Kauroa easily held his own, and won comfortably from tho horses named. The next to finish wero Whimper, Fireworks, The Ranter, Hawick, and Otehau in that order.

Supreme was made a very short-priced favourite in the Hack Hurdles, but an outsider in Rig Blast won very comfortably. Sea Queen and Big Blast gave a lot "of bother at the barrier, and a walkup start was tried with them, but Sea Queen whipped round, and lost about a furlong. Sne then set out, and had a | schooling gallop, but, of course,' was not persevered with. She jumped better today, and it looked as if sho might have lion. Jack Pin made play for five furlongs, when Supremo headed him, but Big Blast was always going well in behind, and, taking charge at the last fence, she comfortably defeated - the favourite. Watchehain was a poor third, and then came Serenity. ■In the May Hurdles St. Kevin and Goodwin Park were backed in that otdor. The former gavo a poor exhibition of jumping, but the latter was ridden a nico race by Traill, and, aftor allowing Timothy and Euroco to make the running for a niilo and a quarter, he then went on, and won nicely. Euroco got chopped out at the start, and lost a lot of ground, but ho soon made a move to 6econd place, and was in. behind Timothy for a mile. Bravest ran ,a good race, and was well ud for most of the journey, but ho tired at the finish. Darby Paul put in a great run at the half-mile, and passed all but Goodwin Park, but tho latter held him safe. Allure also finished fast, and just beat Timothy for third place. The Empire Handicap was a "turn up," tho winner coming from the light-weight division. This was Stepney (Achilles— Stepia), who has been fancicd several times by her stable, but has always failed over a short course. Postillion was made a hot favourite, but after getting a beautiful ran, and leading till within fifty yards of the post, ho collapsed, and finished out of a place. There was a long delay at the barrier, causcd by Lady Moutoa, but the start was a good one. There was a big scramblo going out of tho straight, but not much damage was done. Postillion emerged best, and, going down tho back ho was in front, under a strong pull. Ills victory was now loudly proclaimed, but across the bottom Phosphorus and Byron were on his quarters. Tha favourite led till well into the straight, but Stepney's white fac» could bo seon coming, as also was Leonta. Aided bj; his light weight, Stepney ran. on, and in tho last few yards ho gained the mastery, and won by half a length. I>onta was a ncck away third, with the favourite fourth, and the rest of the field well bunched.

A big field contested the Farewell Hack, fix furlongs. Wild Lupin was a warm favourite, and had every chance to score, but he failed to see. the'distance out. Tree Lucerne led for about half a mile, but Yankee Doodle caught him at the entrance io the straight. l.ord Lupin then came fast on the rails, and, finishing stronglv, won by a ncck. Master Lupin was third, and' ths next to finish were Wild Lupin and Kew.
