A SHEPHERD MISSING. (By Telegraph— Press Association.) Invercargill, May 25. William Jennings, a shepherd on denary Station, near Wnikawa, has been missing from May 2.. On that dato ho left his hut to ride to 1 tho homestead, five miles away, and nothing has been seen of him since. There was a foot of snow on the ground, aud the weather was misty. It is believed that Jennings rode over a precipicp. Tho missing man is about fifty years old, and has a brother-in-law at Catlins River. DROWNED IN A GRAVEL PIT. Invercargill, May 25. A married woman named Mary Ann Holland was drowned in a gravel pit at Tisbury on Saturday. l She was standing on tha bank with her son, aged nine, when tho bank gave way, precipitating lier into six feet of water. Tho little boy called his brother, agod 19, who was working sorcio distanco away, and tho elder boy managed to get his mother out. Efforts to restore animation,,.however, failed, and Dr. Hogg pronounced lifo ex: tinct. ■/

CRUSHED BY A TRUCK. Greymouth, ■ May 25. On Saturday morning a serious accident befell a boy named John Armstrong, aged •( years, sou of Mr. James Armstrong, mine manager. The boy was standing on the railway lino at Stillwater with his father between two trnoks, when the engine suddenly bumped tho trucks, and the lad got. his right arm severely crushed between the buffers. He was taken to Greymouth Hospital, where it was found necessary to remove tho limb. The lad is now progressing satisfactorily.

A MYSTERY CLEARED UP. Hastings, May 23. The body of AVi JJgiahi Maitaira, aged twenty-one years, who disappeared mysteriously from Tukituki a week ago, was found in three feet of water in the Tukituki Hirer at midday to-day. Deceasod was riding to Waimarama in cojuoany with a Native named Shamrock. When near Tukituki Maitaira dismounted and Shamrock rode on. Maitaira was not seen alive again.

At tho inquest a verdict was returned that deceased was drowned whilst in a state of intoxication, but that thero was no evidence to show whether it was accidental or suicide. A rider was added that the eridenoe disclosed that liquor was supplied freely to young Natives in Hastings, and that Natives, whether old or young, can procure liquor for consumption off premises.
