CROWDED PIER COLLAPSES. THIRTY LIVES LOST. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright New York, May 25. Ten thousand Britishers who were celebrating Empire Day at Longbeach, California, had assembled at tho end of the double-decked pier, when the structure oollapsed. Hundreds fell on tho heads of those on the second deck, and others fell into the ocean. Thirty were killed, most of them women, and fifty were injured.' Hundreds of others were overcome by hysteria, fright, and shock. A parade had just concluded when the crowds ■ congregated at the end of the pier. The members of the British societies crowding the auditorium underneath received the falling people on their heads when the floor broke. 'The Mayor of Longbeach, Mr. Hatch, narrowly escaped death.
