DEMOCRATIC SPLIT.
TROUBLE OVER WOOL DUTIES.
Br Telegraph—Fresj Association—OoDyrlshl (Rec. May 25, 5.5 p.m.) Washington, May 24, The Senate Committee has considered the wool and sugar schedules of tho Tariff Bill. Senator Walsh condemned the free-wool clauses, allying himself with Senators Kansdol and Thornton, of Louisiana, against tho measure, and thus destroying the- Democratic majority. The Democrats are, bringing pressure to induce him to fall into lino with the party, bo as to avoid the defeat of the Bill. Mr. 'William Whitman, leader of the woollen manufacturers, and for many years president of their National Association, has admitted that the free entry of raw wool 'eventually was likely to benefit the American woollen industry, but American manufacturers are at present well supplied with stocks, and would consequently bo at a disadvantage unless the Act became operative after a lengthy ilnterval. ' ' .
