Protection of Women, A meeting of the Society for the Protection of Women and Children was held on Friday afternoon. Mrs. W. A. Evans presided. There were present Lady Stout, Mesdamcs A. J toby, A. K. Atkinson, G. Ponsonby, J. Kirkcaldie, D. M'Laren, W. I*. Ward, G. Winder, J. li. Glasson, and A. A. Corrigan. A number of cases which had undergone investigation were reported upon, and it was stated that help has Usen rendered whero necessary. Several other coses axo in the meantime being attended to. A Discussion Circle. A literary and debating society has recently baen formed by si number of ladies at karori, and yesterday afternoon till' first meeting of tiio circle was hold at the residence ot Jlrs. Hammond, Many were present, and keen interest was taken in the subject for discussion, which was nothing less than the militant Suliragists and their ways. .Mrs. Hammond read a paper dealing with their tactics and aims, and afterwards sides were taken and an intent-sting discussion followed. It was iinally decided that whilo members agreed that the women of England should bo given the franchise, thoy did not approve of the methods. Tho circle will in future meet fortnightly. Two-Garment Society. The annual distribution of the TwoGarment Society took place yesterday, the vice-presidents and a number,of friends assisting in the somewhat formidable task of allotting so many articles. In all t'hero were fully 3001 garments, aud tlieso woro all packed and sent to ttio various institutions in Wellington, Mrs. C'. Izard, the secretary of the sock-ty. wishes to expres-, her indebtedness to all who gave their assistance yesterday in the task of sorting, packing, and finally sending the garments to their destinations.
Y.W.C.A. Notes Dr. Kats Hogg will give a health lecture, which will bo open to all young women, to-night, at tho Young Women s Christian Association. These talks, given, on tho second Saturday of each month by Jady doctors, aro much appreciated by many girls at tho Y.W.C.A. The subject lor jioxt SundAy's" hour sorvieo at tho Y.W.C.A. will bo Cowper's hymns, and it will be taken by Mr. Jiichard Brown. An interesting programme is being circulated by tho Young Women's Christian Association.. Besides the Bible, Mission, and Prayer Circles, the educational syllabus shows that tiro association is aiming at increasing a lovo for many useful activities. It includes a cookery class, first aid, dressmaking, millinery, physical training-and gymnasium, English literature, arithmetic aud an art class. There is also an interesting series -of lectures plnnu-jd for tho second Saturday in each month. Tho new term for all classes opens in. tho beginning of June. Any girl may enrol at tho Y.W.C.A. office, i'owlds' Buildings, Herbert Street.
Miss M'CaUum, who has been spending a. few weeks with her sister, Mrs. Sicvwright, Tho Terrace, leaves for Dunedm on Monday. Miss tLorimer (Nelson), who has boen spending some days in tho south, arrived in Wellington yesterday by tho Maori from Christchurch. Mrs. Glasgow (Nelson) returned to New Zealand this week from a visit to Lngland. Mis? Bertha Miles is visiting her sister, Mrs. W. F. Handyside, Invercargill. Mrs. Weber (Melbourne) is staying at tho Koval Oak. Miss Kathleen Beard (Mastcrton) passed through Wellington to-day on lior way through to Sydney. Mrs Peter Harrison (Masterton), Miss Harvey, and Miss liiggio (Wanganui) are visiting Wellington, ami aro staying with Miss Cameron, at Kaiwarra. ' Mrs. Arnst (Mastcrton) is visiting Wellington. Miss N. M'Dougall lias returned from her visit to Auckland, and is spending .1 few days with Mrs. Butts (Newtown) before returning to Martiuborough. Miss Carrie Gray (Taratahi) is tho guest of Mrs. A. Johnston, Newtown.

Dr. Edith Huntley lectures to members of ti'io Pioneer Club on Monday evening, lier subject.being "Women's Part in Public Health." At the reception which was given on Thursday evening for Miss Mary Proctor atid Mrs. Knight, the accompanist of the evening was Miss Watkins, who, in addition to playing for the singers, contributed a pianoforte solo.

Girls' Realm Guild Entertainers. An cnjoyablo concert was givt-n oil Thursday evening last at the IJomo for tlio Aged and Needy by members of the Girls' Kealm Guild, assisted, by friends. Thoso who contributed ife-ms to the programme were Madame Mueller, Mrs. Claridgo, Misses Salmon, l'ou.ng, Ilurlov, Harding, Mueller, and Pickett, and the Messrs* Downes and Culvenvcll. A hearty vote o fthanks was given for tlic entertainers. A Presentation. A large gathering of ladies assembled; at the residence of tlio Mayoress of Dan' uevirko (Mrs. Ransom) on Wednesday afternoon, for tlio purpose of bidding faro-! well to Mrs. Wiltshire, who is shortly leaving for Wellington. Pleasant entertainment was provided and during tlio afternoon Mrs. Bennett, on behalf of tha ladies, pawn ted Mrs. Wiltshire with a handsome handbag as 6 token of esteem. News lias been received in Wellington by private cable messago of the death at Torquay, England, oil May 12, of Mrs. Lilias Farquhar Smith, relict of tlio lata Mr. John Elislia Smith, solicitor, of Wei 4 lington. Sho'was in her 78th year. Concert at the College. A most -enjoyable concort, arranged bj; Mr. Robert Parker, was given in tha Students' Hall at Victoria College, last evening, in aid of the Men's Club. Tha hall was crowded, and tho programme was thoroughly appreciated. It opened with a bracket contributed by an instrumental quartet—a Kavotto from tho album of lianieau, and a charming "Old English Dance" of Coweu's. Mr. Robert Parker was at tlio piano, while tho Misses Kennedy and Miss Erica Hoby took tho violin parts, i Miss Gertrudo Hunt fol- ; lowed with an artistic interpretation of' Bishop's "Should he Upbraid," and Miss Nellie Simpson (flautist) played with charming tasto and expression Edward Gorman's "Waltz Gracieuse." Mr. John, Prousn, who was in capital voice, sang G'owen's "River of Years," his fine baritono being nicely suited to the item. Then followed a four-part arrangement by Franz Abt, "Thuringian Folk Song," by Messrs. Bowman, Farmer, Laycock, and Wanvii, who also contributed, later in tlio evening, "Tho Thrco Chafers." A most cnjoyablo item, rarely, heard in Wellington in recent years, was Handel's celebrated "Water Music," played by Mr. Parker (at tho i>iano), tlio Misses Kennedy, and Miss lioby. Miss Hunt added a second number, "I'vo Been lloamiug". (Home), as also did Mr. Prouse, who sang "Ho, Jolly Jenkins" (Sullivan), and, as an encoro number, "Gipsy John,''' Mr. S. liankino contributed a musical monologue, and as au encore, gave "Roses.". During an interval in tlio entertainment Professor Yon Zedlitz moved a vote of thank; to Mr. Parker and his friends lor their kindly interest and cnjoyablo entertainment. The motion was carried by acclamation. A danco followed tho conclusion of tlio programme.
A largo children's party was given yes--terday afternoon by Mrs. Plimmer in Miss Tendall's tea room. The inner room was screened off from tho outer room for tho children, and tho tables wero decorated with chrysanthemums and bon-bons, with all sorts of fascinating things attached. -Mrs. Plimmer yore a blue coat and skirt, with blue liafc and furs. With lior was Mrs. J. Parker, in navy bluo and dark hat.
An enjoyable "social" was held at the Makotuku Methodist Church on Wednesday. The l!«v; .Mr. Spencqr presided, and vocal items wero given by Misses Mildon, Xowling, «nd Mrs. Pettersen, Messrs. Hi'glifield' and Kedward, Mrs. Bell, Mr. G. Carniichael, Miss Newling, and Mrs. Goodwin. Mr. M'Cormack gavo a recitation, and Mr. Jackson read an, essay on tho life of George Muller.

Tho Dannevirlto Society held a successful "social" at tho Oddfellows' Hall on Wednesday cveniug. Danco music was supplied by Mr. C. Little, whilo extras vero playcu by Mrs. Dav* idson and Miss Paton. A song by Lieutenant AYalsh and a sword dance by Mr. D. M'JConzio provided further eujoyment. Refreshments were dispensed by Mesdamos G. Harris and W. Joanstone.
