MAIN TRUNK SERVICE.
NEED FOR SECOND EXPRESS. , The need for the second Main Trunk express, even in the winter season, was again exemplified yesterday (states Wednesday's "New Zealand Herald"). A prominent Auckland business man, desiring to book a sleeping b:rth by • that ■ night's train, went to the station for that ' t purpose early Hn the morning. He was • informed that the ordinary sleeper was full, but that a second one would not be put on unless thisre were at least seven more applicants jfor berths. By S p.m. the necessary quota of passengers had applied, so that two sleepers left, one with its bwths filled, and the other well patronised. There. are always passengers joining the, express at intermediary stations, and, tinder tho present arrange- •• ments it is practically impossble for all of them to obtain sleeping accommodation. A good deal has been eaid about the expense of running the second cxi press, •but Auckland business men complain that nothing is said about the wnount accruing to the Railway Department, even supposing that only 20 through return passengers avail themselves of the extra train. It is understood (adds the "Herald") that the Chamber of Commerce has by no means finished with this subject, but intends to proceed with its agitation 'or the Restoration of the full service. !
