ESTATES PURCHASED.

FOR SUBDIVISION AND SETTLEMENT.

The Government have just concluded negotiations for the purchase of two estates to bo subdivided for closer settlement—"Lake Run," Tophouse, in tlio Howard Survey District, Nelson, and a property near Fortification Hill, " a'niahaka, m the Southland district. lhe Tophouss property, which part of the estate of tho late Mr. J. M. Kerr, consists of 2916 acrest of freehold, and 2786 acres of Crown leasehold. It has been purchased principally to give access to Crown lands in the Howard B'jjch' now being opened for settlement, lhe country is reported to be suitable for pastoral and agricultural purposes, and when it is subdivided with portions of the Crown land,'tho settlers will have in Ihcir holdings a fair amount of open grass land, on which to ( begin farming at once. This is a very considerable advantage to settlers on bush lauds. The Government ore to. have immediate possession. The other block, in the Southland district! is of 3013 acres, Kid it is owned by Messrs. Washbourne Brothers. The land is said to be suitable for mixed farming, and to be capable of vast improvement.
