Easter Island, with its mysteries and fascinations for the scientists, and lying well out of tho route of vessels trading between Australasia and the west 'coast of Amoriea, was-willed at by the steiuncr Knight of the Garter, which arrived at Newcastle a few days ago. Captain Stephen?, master of the Knight of the Garter, said that when they reached that island Governor Edmunds, an Englishman, and the only white man there, boarded the vessel, and was welcomed. The natives were anxious to trade with tlio steamer's crow. In return for their goods they did not -seek money, but wauled clothes. Many exchiuiges were made with the natives for meat, fruit, and vegetables. The gigantic earrings in ninny parts of tho island bear indications of early civili. sation, and hare long been a mystery, which remains to be sol -;d by scientists. An expedition of scientists from the British Museum is going there next July, and nHut the same timo a party for the Smithsonian Institute, in America, intends making investigations. Easter Island is governed by Chile. The Government has a sheep station there. The wool crop last year was valued at .£.IOO. A correspondent of the British Medical Journal reports that an ovcrsa-r at a'' timber mill in Lagos was caught by his coat-tails in a lly-wheol and swung round for an hour and a half.
