OTAGO BOYS' HIGH SCHOOL JUBILEE.
4 In August tho Otago Boys' High School celebrates its jubilee, the school having been founded in 18li3. Tho school commenced its career inauspiciously, as the small steamer which was conveying tho first headmaster from tho sailing ship, by which ho had arrived at. Port Chalmers, to Dunedin, was wrcckod, and tho headmaster and his family were drowned. The record of tho Otago School during the fifty years of'its existence, is ono of which any school might bo proud. Tho university results show every year what a sound education is imparted to the hoys, while in athletics the school has always been particularly strong; and at t.imes the school Rugby fifteen lias played in senior grade matches with credit. The C'adet Corps has always been a strong feature of the school, and for many years was under Ilia command of Mr. G. 31. Thomson, M.P. As a result of their training at school, a largo number of boys volunteered for servico in South Africa, chief among them being Colonels Robin and Bauchop. To celebrate tho jubilee ex-pupils of the school will gather in largo numbers in Duneilin in August next; and an attractive programme is being arranged. There will bo several football matches, of which tho most interesting will probably lie that between sides chosen from boys who were at school befcre 1.800 versus boys whoso school days dale between the years IS9II and 1900. Rumour hits it that in view of the advanced age of some of tho players the spells played win be five minutes each, with ton minutes interval. At night tho jubilee dinner will be held, at which three speeches will be made commemorative of the old boys of three different periods. The speakers will be. Mr. Saul Solomon, K.C., Mr. T. D. Penrce, rector of the Southland High School, and Mr. F. H. Campbell, a present master of tho school.
.On Sunday tho old boys will march in procession -uider banners showing their years (or decades) of attendance, to the school, where a ehapel service will lie held. On Monday all will attend the school for prayers, and after a speech by the rector, he morning will bo devoted to speeches on the history of the school, the speakers being Mr. Herbert Webb, Mr. (3. JI. Thomson, M.l'., and Major George ■llitchie. In addition, it is expected that the Mayor of Duncdin,-Mr. W. D. Stewart, who is an ex-pupil and n Minister of the Crown, will address the old boys. It is also proposed to hold a garden party, a dance, and a smoko concert, so that there will bo plenty of opportunity for old boys from alt parts of New Zealand to renew the friendship of their youth. An announcement will be found in our advertising columns calling a meeting of old pupils who aro resident in Wellington in order to ascertain "how many of them can go down, to Dunedin in August, and ako to arrnngo for some celebration to l;o held in Wellington by those old boys who cannot go south.
