MASTERTON NOTES.

Masterton, May 13. air. Speight, a geologist from the Otago University, was recently engaged to report on the Mangaone oil wells. His report is said to be very encouraging. Ho states that the indications arc similar to those at New Plymouth just prior to the striking -of oil. The boro at Mangaono is now down to a depth of 1845 feet, and strong fumes of petroleum gas are bein" omitted.

Mr. A. H. Cockayne, Government BioOK'st gave an interesting address on Saturday last before the members of the \Vairarapa branch of the Teachers' Institute, on "The Farm and its Relation: to Nature Study," At the conclusion of Ins address, for vrhich he was heartily thanked, Mr. Cockayne intimated his intention of donating a prize of three guin-' eas to the school which, during the next twelve months, made the best collection of pasturage plants, dried, mounted and labelled.

At a meeting of tho Wairarapa Caledon inn bociety on Saturday a number of sujj-cominittoes were set up to control tho affairs of the society during the ensuing .v<?ar- It is_ proposed to hold a number of mglesidcs" during the winter months, Mr. F. A clay-bird pigeon match'was fired by the Masterton Gun Club on Saturuay last, in ideal weather. Mr. A. lorns, of Featherston, shot tho \yhole of his "birds"—twenty-four—and took tho first prize of ,£5 10s. Mr. R. J. King was second with twenty-twi* "birds."
