CLOSING OF THE GREENS. After several disagreeable week-ends, tho sun shone out bravely on Saturday afternoon, when thoso bowling clubs who had not already "tucked their greens in" for their long winter sleep did so most reluctantly. As a rule bowls is a game that can be played in fairly dependable weather in Wellington np till the end of April, but this year the summer ended abruptly in Mnrch—early in March—and winter came down "like tlio wolf on tho fold," in Bvron's poem. It came in' tho form of colil southerlies, and effectively damped the spirits of players. Bowls is essentially a game for warm sunshine, and when "Old Sol's" influence: begins to fail it is time to wrap up the globes of lignum vitao in oily rags.

VICTORIA CLUB. The Victoria Club's green was closed for tho season on Saturday. Thero was a full attendance of members and lady friends, l'he final game in tho club's link's contest resulted in a win for Hueston. against Snaddoii by one point—24—23. The teams were: F. North, L. R. Partridge, G. Baggctt, W. J. Hueston (s.); Dr. Maclaurin, A. M'Lcod, J. Martin, J. Sn addon (s.). NEWTOWN CLUB. Full advantago of the very fine afternoon on Saturday was taken by a largo mini bar of the members' to liavo their last "roll up" for this season, and a very enjoyable game was played by teams representing the president against those for tho vice-president. The president's teams won on tho aggregate by tiro points. At the invitation of the directors of .the club there was a capital attendance of wives of members as their guests at afternoon tea. The president (Mr. Georgo Scott), in thanking the ladies for their very welcome assistance in supervising afternoon tea for members throughout tho season, stated that he hoped that they would a l so be able to attend the card parties which were to be given by the club during the recess. At the conclusion of the day's play the president addressed the members. He remarked on the club's success in inter-club competitions 1 , and attributed it to a great extent to the excellent green which members had had to practise and play on :tlirougliout the season. Cheers having been given for the ladies, tho visitors, the president, and the caretaker, the green was closed for the 1912-13 season.
