OUTBREAK IN CARTERTON.
BUILDING GUTTED. '» (By T#Uetbpli.—Correspondent.) Carterton, May 18. Thero was a vigorous peal on the tirobell at 1.30 this morning, tlio causo being an outbreak of firo in a wooden building i" High Street, belonging to Parker's estate, and occupied l>.r Mr. F. S. Savage, cabinetmaker, Mr. H. 11. Armstrong, saddler, and Mr, C. Phillip;, solicitor. . When discovered, the firo had a good hold of tho portion occuniod by Mr. Savage, and the brigade, with its reel and manual engine, did all it could to conlino the firo to this centre, but tho building, being an old oue, the flames spread rapidly to tho back portion of Armstrong's shop. Willing helpers quickly salvaged Armstrong's shop of its stock, but nothing was saved from Savage's, tho operations of the brigade being hampered in tho locality- by plate-glass windows. Mr. Armstrong lost all his tools and working material, and Mr. Savage everything. The causo of the outbreak is a mystery, bs thero was no fire in the building during Saturday, and everything appeared perfectly safe at 9.30 p.m. when tho premises were closed.
Tho insurances aro: Mr. Savage's stock, _C 550 in the South British; Mr. Armstrong's slock, JCIGO in tho Queensland Ollice, and .£IOO in the Commercial Union. The building, which was completely gultcd, is also covered, but tho amount is not available just now. Mr. Phillips's office furniture is covered by a small policy.
