SPORTS BODIES OPPOSE ITS ABOLITION. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Dunedin, May IG. In conscqucnco of statements mado at tho eonforeneo of representatives of Societies for the Prevention of Cruelty lo Animals at Wellington recently, with refercnco (o tho cruelty of pigeon-shoot-ing, a special meeting was called to-night by tho Otago branch of tho New Zealand Sports Protection League, with a specialinvitation lo members of Gun and Coursing Clubs. Tho following resolutions wero carried: "That this meeting desires to outer an omphalic protest against HlO rash stntanents published in connection with the practice of holding coursing meetings within enclosed areas, and also deprecates Hie attempt that is now being made 'to suppress this old and popular pastime by having a dome inserted in the proposed Bill for the better prevention of cruelty. Tho club further urges the Sports Protection League to take tlio mailer in hand, ami pledges i'i-elf to givo that Ixxly hearly support." "That this meeting views with alarm the sleps taken by a small portion of the community to put a stop to pigeon shooting, and requests Ihe boards of control to tako ilhe necessary steps to, prevent •such interference with tlio rights ot sportsmen, and to bring tho matter Mfore the various for ''heir opinion on the matter."
