TIMARU STRIKE.
LABOUR FEDERATION EMISSARY ARRIVES. (By Telegraph.—l'reps Association.) Timaru, May 15. The port was quiet to-day. Mr. P. C. Webb, -of the Federation of Labour, CRino from Christchurch to-day, and interviewed so mo of the heads of the houses concerned in the shipping trade, and asked for u coiifurouco regarding tho watcrpiders' .strike. : No arrangement having been made by the citizens' committee for such a contingency, thoso spoken to as individuals had no authority to promise a conference. Tho Kin Ora is expected to-morrow to load meat, etc., and the line to be taken b.y.tho. watcrsidcrs is awaited with Interest, but without anxiety, as doublo tire number of men required can be got outside tho union. , Duned'n, May 15. Tho local branch of tho Waterside ■Workers' Union put up iu notice this taorning at the wharf saying that no •union member was to engage for work on the steamer John until further notice-. The secretary stated that the men had decided to put up the notice pending instruction frojn the Federation of labour The John was partly loaded at Timaru by five unionists and two .non-unionists being employed. Tho loading was completed by free labour. This .afternoon the Federation's reply came to hand, and the agent for the John was informed that tho vessel would bo discharged as usual. In the meantime the John put into Onmnru owing to stress of U'eather, but local agents have made arrangements to work carßo with their permanent staff.
