BYRON'S FAMOUS POEM.
CITED IN COURT BY DETECTIVE. Frederick Street, in liie city of Wellington, was u subject under discussion'ill tliJ* Supreme Court yesterday morning, during the hearing of a ease ill which two young men were charged with assaulting u Chinese. Detective-Sergeant Cosseiis was in the witness-box, and was under cross-examination by Mr. ,1. J. M'Grath, who was appearing for one of the prisoners. "What sort o£ a locality is this?" asked Mr. M'Grath. Detective Cassells: It's a pretty hot shop. Mr. M'Grath: It wouldn't surprise you to find a beer bottle there? Detective Cassells: No; but it would be an empty one. His Jlonour smiled, and there was laughter at the back of the Court. Mr. M'Grath proceeded to question tlie witness as to the night side of Frederick Street. lie presumed that there was always drinking, bottles living about, and tho like. ' Detective Cassells: It reminds one of the night in Bi'ussc-ls preceding the battle of Tv'aterlco—"Sounds of revelry by night, and bright the lamps shorn; o'er lffii' women and brave men." Mr. M'Grath: I wasn't there, so I don't know much about it. Detective Cassells: No doubt. But you must have read the poem. ■Mr. M'Grath: It seems to me to have bean more like the night after St. Patrick's Day (the assault was oil March IS). "You don't suggest," said his Honour, amidst laughter, "that tho Chinamen keep St. Patrick's Day?" Mr. M'Grath: .Xo, your Honour; but some Scotchmen do.
