MAYOR OF HASTINGS HEAD.

He was a man ot ttjong force of character, and possessed of on abundance of energy, characteristics which made him in many respects an ideal Mavor. Deceased was born at Kendall. Westmoreland, in 1653, and left England for New Zealand in 1883. spent a year in Chnstchurch, after which he tpok up his residence in Hastings, where ho started business as a hoilso furnisher and •contractor. His operations were suliseqnentlv extended to the timber trade, until to-day his firm, is ouo of tlw most important in tho province. Ho took « close interest in municipal matters, and after serving a term on the council ho »n. elected Mayor two years ago, and at the 'recent elections lie was returned again for the third eonsccutivo time to the Mayoral elkir. He was a raembor of tli< Napier Hospital Board, and of the Hastj ingl Firo Board, beside? being ulentihed with most of the local institutions.
