ANOTHER MARE'S NEST.
BASELESS ALLEGATIONS EXPOSED. (liy Motrrapli.—Special Corrcepundcnt.) Dannevirkc, May 13, Mr. Georgo Iluuttr, member lor Vaipawa, hud Lis attention directed yesterdii.V to an ai'liclu in u Wellington newspaper c'Jiicurniiiß U:j expenditure on a road to connect l'urangahau with .11 atiimu Station, The article was headed "Greasing the Tat I'ig," mid it was inferred that the Government liad spent money oil a road lor rich land-owners to use motor-cars upon. Mr. Hunter stated that tho article was an absurd distortion ol' facts, and was evidently written, by u- jourualistio ignoramus. Any person knowing tho country knew that Hie road was absolutely of no benefit to squatters, mid was not likely lo be used by them fur motor traffic, The Government had voted .tSOO for the erection of bridges on the road, because the bridges already existing had been erected by private individuals, and were in a highly dangerous slate. Tho road ran through closer settlement, and as there was a school in the locality, children had to make use of it. To suggest that tho H'aipukiirau Comity Council is wealthy to the point of alVluence, said Mr. Hunter, is palpably absurd, as it is olio of tho smallest county councils iu the North Island. "The whole thing," lie concluded, "is a tissue of untruths, and if anything further is necessary to show how fn.' the writer is in his facts, it is flic absurd statement that the district through which this road runs is represented in Parliament, by a squatter. : That is quite wrong: tho locality in question is represented by Sir. Escott.'member lor Paliiatua, who is a small farmer, if ever there was one.
