A BEQUEST FOB A REBATE. A deputation of two members- of the Executive Committee of tlin recent Citizens' Carnival, Messrs. C. G. Wilsonand C. R. Smith, waited on the h'inaneo Committee of (ho Citv Council yesterday to nsk that certain charges made by tho City Engineer's Department for 'work done in prepariug Newtown- Park for tho carnival should either be reduced or bo borne by (lie general funds of the corporation. The amount had been, he said, increased by reason of t.lve fact that overtime rales hart had, to 1)0 paid for some of tho work, owing to two holidays occurring (luring the week. Tho members of the denotation pointed out -that tho carnival had ljfim organised in order to pet funds wlipvewith (o beautify the city, ami 'that there were precedents to justify the City Council in remitting or reducing (ho charges, or evetn to justify the pn.vmon-t of a subsidy. They stated that the feeling of tho committee, members of which had worked very hard for (ho success of tho carnival, and incidentally put (heir hands deep into their own pockets, was that tlin future success of llio carnival might be jeopardised if the council insisted upon the pavmenl of ■this large account in full. The Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke) promised the deputation that tho question would have tho consideration of the committee. FTe explained also 'that in dealing with two other accounts of tho carnival, the Tramways Committee had the previous dav. whilst still asking for the payment of'both in full, recommended the council to make a substantial donation of part of the amounts to the carnival funds.
